tnwh（てにをは）は現在8人編成のバンドで、東京を中心に活動しています。メンバーはそれぞれ造形美術やパフォーマンス、編集やスペースの運営など、様々な文化表現に携わっています。

バンドは当初、それまで大阪で音楽活動をしていた私が東京の美術学校（四谷アート・ステュディウム）での勉強を経て、かつてのバンドメンバーであった畑野を東京に招き、ギターとドラムのデュオとして活動が始まりました。

デュオにおいていくつか方向を探り、空間を活かした音の配置や、音楽の意匠をあえて平板に捉えて、身体化されたサンプリング感覚を相対化する手法が形を整えていきました。それに加えて、流動的で集団的なバンドイメージの獲得と、ポリフォニックな音楽の本質をより掘り下げるため、高木が身近にいたアーティストたち（いんまき、西浜、関根、河口、久瀬、江頭）に声をかけて、2016年の春頃より現在の編成になりました。

今回の3枚のアルバムは2015年秋からおよそ一年をかけて録音したものです。バンドメンバーを集めながら長い期間を設けることで、アルバムジャケットに示されているように、個人の思惑を超える、変化するバンドの主体が刻印されるようなレコーディングが主な目標でした。

また、デュオの時につくったアルバム『BLACK FLAG』（2013）の制作はほとんど高木個人の作業で行われ、そこにあった成果と限界を考えることから、今回は外部のエンジニアと協力して、なるべくバンドの運動感を損なわないようなミックスに注意が払われました。

ここに収録された形式的に操作されたかのように思える音楽は、聴く人によっては魂の込められていない空虚な響きに聴こえることもあるかもしれません。あるいはむしろ空虚さが足りないとも。もちろん誰もが好きなように音楽を聴き、または無視するべきです。私としてはただ、まさに自らの内なる声に耳を傾けるため、好意的な疑いの眼差しをもって音楽を行うばかりです。

とはいえこれらのアルバムは何らかの意見表明などではなく、ましてや学術論文でもない、きわめていい加減な人間たちのつくった、ただの音楽です。聴く人に楽しんでもらえれば、その他に望みはありません。それと少しのお金が。

On the Albums

tnwh (teniwoha) is a band currently consists of eight members, based in Tokyo. Each member engages in various cultural expressions such as figurative art, performance, editing, and organizing creative space.

The band first began as a guitar and drum duo. After been involved in music activities in Osaka, Takagi studied in an art school, Yotsuya Art Studium, Tokyo, then invited Hatano, his former band member, to Tokyo.

Several directions as a duo were explored. Configurations of sound that take advantage of space, and methods to relativize the embodied sense of sampling by purposely comprehending music design monotonously were developing. In addition, to obtain a fluid and collective band image, and probe the polyphonic nature of music, Takagi asked fellow artists (Inmaki, Nishihama, Sekine, Kawaguchi, Kuze, and Eto) to join and the band took current composition in spring 2016.

These three albums were recorded over approximately a year from fall 2015. By gathering band members and setting a long period of time, the aim was to realize the recording that would brand the subject of band which keeps changing beyond individual intentions, as expressed in the album jacket.

The production of the album “Black Flag” (2013) form the duo period was mostly done by Takagi alone. Considering the achievements and limitations there, in these albums, in collaboration with an external engineer, much attention were payed to realize the mixing that would not impair the band’s sense of motion.

The music recorded here which may seem manipulated, in form, may sound empty without soul, or perhaps not vacuous enough, depending on the listeners. Of course anybody shall listen to music as one pleases or ignore it. I simply do music with favorable doubt in order to listen to my inner voices.

However, these albums are not any types of expressions of opinion, nor an academic paper, it is a mere music made by extremely irresponsible human beings. We only hope that the people who listens would enjoy. And, why not, a little money.
